Voting was weighted 50-50 to judges and public vote, and we'd like to thank all our community members who voted for Download. - Our win is proof that you really do make up the most passionate and committed music community in the world!   The judges were impressed with the vibrant online community that interact via the forums, as well as the Main Stage webcast, Download TV, the fan forum tapes, the Radio 1 podcast along with the range of engaging content, from competitions to the "dogs blogs". We asked "HullHellHalifax" - our lead messageboard moderator - if he would be prepared to accept the gong on behalf of the Download community and Live Nation. He did us all proud, with shout-outs from the stage to Jezebel, Webwitch, Triaxis and many more. We expect to screen the big man's acceptance speech here soon. It was a good thing to wake up to."  She was first informed that the stage had been re-named via Dimebag's brother and ex-bandmate, Vinnie Paul. Haney has since been invited to the U.K. Download festival as a guest of honour by Live Nation. - She sees a lasting testament to the legendary metal guitarist in the bands who continue to mine his sound. "There are a helluva lot of bands who are influenced by Darrell," she said. It will be displayed on a hill overlooking the main arena. After the festival, the scuplture will be dismantled and recycled back into more cans by a local charity employing the disadvantaged. BUT - we can only do this with your help - We need 60,000 cans collecting over the weekend to help produce this mass piece of art so would like to encourage everyone to bring their cans to the hubs so that we can collect as many cans as possible. We are committed to delivering an event that continually improves its environmental performance. To this end, we have been working with SustainAPL to identify our significant environmental impacts and focus on reducing the amount of resources we use and waste we produce, along with looking at using energy and materials from more sustainable resources and ensuring that our waste is either reused or recycled.  Come on then we hear you ask - what are you doing about it??  Well, on transport, we're promoting Liftshare; championing the use of public transport and providing reliable shuttle buses; festival staff will be using bikes to get around the site from build to break, and they will be living on site to reduce local journeys to accomodation. All site lighting will use energy efficient bulbs; there will be a site-wide energy efficiency program to turn off unused equipment; bio-diesel will be trialled for the production village power supply. Meanwhile, there will be no programs this year as they will be blue-toothed to visitors as they enter the site.  At the end of the event all unwanted tents and camping equipment will be collected and donated to local Scout groups and Tents for Africa. There will be a deposit charged on beer cups that will be refunded on return; all of these cups will then be recycled. Plus, we have  been working in partnership with NW Leicestershire District Council to install segregated paper, cans and plastic bins on site that will be uplifted on a regular basis and sent for recycling.  The University of Central England, as part of the Event Design Course, will be given used cans from the site to create a piece of art during the event that will then be recycled back into more cans by a local charity employing the disadvantaged.   We have brought on specific environmental groups / charities to give advice to festival goers about improving their environmental impacts away from the event. And to top it all off, "Crafty Crapper" will be onsite to compost human waste from the toilets!  We are already planning for 2008 and intend to add extra initiatives in place by then covering the extensive use of renewable energy, intensive energy efficiency programs, composting of all food waste, increased use of recycled materials and improved transport solutions.
